Jeremy Leggett is Chief executive of Solar Century, the UK’s largest solar solutions company. What should we be doing as the oil runs – and peak oil is coming sooner than we might think – and what does it take to be an environmental entrepreneur?

Great interview. Solar power is definetely a step in the right direction to finding an environmentally friendly power source to replace oil. I think that if enough effort is put into solar energy research, it can one day become one of the earth's main energy providers.

Looks like this technology and some of these ideas could be used in the far north of Ontario Canada to power communities and fishing lodges.

With oil now over $100 a barrel, and several authoritarian regimes holding the world hostage with its oil supply - Iran, Russia, Venezuela being the most obvious - entrepreneurship has never been more important or vital to world politics. We need to push for alternative energy faster than ever before. I heard there was a car that now runs entirely on biodiesel .. encouraging, and can't happen fast enough.

That was some extremely important information. I do not agree with some of the comments above, but we got to do something about this. What you've posted is just a small step, we need a giant leap for mankind!

Fantastic ideas from Jeremy Leggett, i believe a large minority of people in this world dont even think about oil supplies & the environment let alone thinking of ideas to help & even replace the resources we use.

Submitted by TheCriticalCritic (not verified) on Sun, 03/02/2008 - 01:32.

2010 as the date for when oil supplies will become scarce? I don't necessarily agree with that timetable. Companies are now putting more effort into exploring the oceans -- I suspect there is enough to tap for many more generations.

That being said, I'm all for alternative fuels, but they have to become cost efficient. Last I read solar/wind/thermal power are still very expensive alternatives... I'd argue that the stigma needs be removed from nuclear technology...

Great interview and great answers. Solar power is definetely a step in the right direction to finding an environmentally friendly power source to replace oil. I think that if enough effort is put into solar energy research, it can one day become one of the earth's main energy providers. That would be great because it wouldn't harm our environment and it would never run out. Even if we can't find a way to harness enough solar energy, I think the research will still help guide us into the direction of finding other environmentally friendly energy solutions.
